Emanuel began to study piano at the age of six and Joachim was his first piano teacher. Emanuel Ax, born in what is now Ukraine in 1949, started his musical training as a child in Warsaw before studying with Mieczyław Munz at the Juilliard School after his family emigrated to the USA.
